The construction of a new welcome centre and community facilities for St Elizabeth's Church of Ireland, Dundonald. Part of the existing entrance to the Church was demolished to make way for the contemporary extension that includes a café, two multi-purpose rooms and numerous offices. The project was the vision of a number of driven members of the congregation, in particular Dr Helen Roseveare and Dr Patricia Morton, who led the project with vision and ambition.
With varying depths of made ground, a steel tube driven pile solution was adopted to support the steel frame and precast concrete two-storey building. The architectural vision was for the roof to lightly rest on top of the clerestory glazing and float over the entrance area which we were able to achieve by using slender flat bar columns that subtly sat behind the window mullions giving the appearance of a floating roof.
