Leenan Pier, situated on the west coast of the Inishowen Peninsula in County Donegal, is a vital access point for local fishing activities. Due to its exposure to continuous swells, the pier is unsuitable for permanent berthing, requiring fishing boats to travel to Fahan Marina for shelter. This project, funded under the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine (DAFM) 2021 allocation, aims to improve the pier’s safety and functionality by constructing an 8-metre-wide slipway, extending and upgrading the adjacent boatyard, and enhancing supporting infrastructure. The improvements will enable safe access for fishing boats, provide secure storage facilities, and ensure long-term usability of the pier for the local community.
Key Aspects of the Project
• Slipway Construction: Development of an 8-metre-wide slipway to provide safe access for fishing boats.
• Boatyard Expansion: Reconfiguration of the boatyard to accommodate 6 to 8 trailer parking spaces, enhancing operational capacity.
• Access and Retaining Wall Enhancements: Construction of a new access road with improved gradients, turning areas, and a 2.6-metre-high retaining wall to support site stability.
• Winch Installation: Placement of a new winch system and power pack for improved boat handling and storage.
• Lighting and Safety Features: Addition of new lighting infrastructure to enhance visibility and safety outside daylight hours.
• Environmental Considerations: Designed to minimise excavation, reduce construction impact, and ensure compliance with sustainability principles.
Design ID’s Role
Design ID were appointed as Principal Designer and Civil and Structural Engineer, leading the project from initial site assessments to detailed design and construction oversight. Key responsibilities included:
• Concept and Detailed Design: Developed optimised design solutions for the slipway, access road, and retaining structures.
• Site Assessments and Risk Management: Conducted structural evaluations and identified key risks associated with pier exposure, storm resilience, and operational safety.
• Value Engineering: Focused on minimising excavation and construction costs while ensuring long-term durability.
• Stakeholder Engagement: Coordinated with Donegal County Council and local fishing communities to align the project with user needs.
• Regulatory Compliance and Tendering Support: Assisted in securing approvals and preparing tender documentation.
The Leenan Pier upgrade will significantly improve safety, accessibility, and functionality for local fishers, ensuring the pier remains a sustainable and resilient infrastructure asset for the region.
