Design ID were the Civil and Structural Engineers for the redevelopment of an existing building located on Hill Street, Belfast.

The Civil Engineering design utilised the existing below-floor drainage where possible, as well as limiting the amount of ground floor slab breakout required. As part of the redevelopment, the foul and surface water networks were segregated into two separate discharges to the existing combined sewer within Hill Street. An additional surface water connection was provided to allow for a future connection to a dedicated surface water sewer in Hill Street, in line with Northern Ireland Water’s plans.

The project involved excessive consultation with Northern Ireland Water (NIW) regarding the sewer routing options to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and future infrastructure planning. An underground attenuation tank was incorporated into the design, with rainwater pipes (RWPs) directed through the tank to control surface water discharge rates.

Due to the presence of soft ground conditions, drainage was suspended from the floor slab, mitigating the need for extensive excavation and providing a structurally stable solution for the drainage system.
