Nore Academy, Isle of Sheppey SEND

Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) | Education
Isle of sheppey

Design ID has delivered the civil and structural design for a new SEND school on the Isle of Sheppey, serving Year 7-11 pupils with SEMH and ASD needs. The 2-storey modular building, developed under the DfE MMC framework, includes specialised teaching spaces, therapy rooms, a forest school base, and sports facilities. The site features SuDS-compliant car parking and both soft and hard play areas, emphasising sustainability through off-site construction and solar energy systems.

The Civil Engineering design involved early engagement with Kent LLFA and EA due to the site’s location within Flood Zone 2, and coordination with adjacent infrastructure. The grass pitch drainage was designed to mimic green field flows and avoided a requirement to discharge surface water from this area to the public surface water network.

Detailed cut-and-fill analysis ensured an earthworks balance across the site to minimise material movement and costs, whilst also ensuring no impact on flood risk.

The school has been designed to achieve Net Zero Carbon for regulated energy, through a thermally efficient building envelope, all electric services and on-site solar panels. This project highlights Design ID’s expertise in delivering sustainable and efficient designs within tight program constraints. The school is set to open in 2025 and will provide a vital educational facility for the Sabden Multi-Academy Trust.
