Arbroath Flood Protection

Arbroath

Arbroath (Brothock Water) Flood Protection Scheme was designed to reduce the risk of flooding from the Brothock Water and provide a one in 200-year standard of protection.

Design ID provided tender design for the Contractor on this £8million flood alleviation scheme.

The key elements of the work were:

  • The construction of three flood storage areas at Brothock Meadows, St Vigeans and Hercules Den, using embankments and flow controls to retain flood water above the natural ground level.
  • Enhanced flood defences including a combination of new flood walls and embankments where there are no flood defences, or where existing defences are in poor condition, local raising of existing walls or refurbishment of the same.
  • Assessment of existing trash screen and riverside infrastructure for refurbishment or replacement
  • New positive drainage solutions to enable rapid but controlled de-watering during and following flood events. This included utilising standard off the shelf solutions from the supply chain where possible

Across a number of operations Design ID reviewed sheet piling, site and geotechnical requirements to provide specifications and construction solutions. A particular area where we were able to bring value was where an extensive new flood embankment was required on an area of poor ground where we able to provide a construction phased approach to the design with controlled and managed settlement, and therefore avoid the new Works Information requirement of ground improvement and piling.

We specifically provided design solutions for:

  • Flood Storage areas, including precast pipe and box culverts, headwalls, joitning, foundations and detailing.
  • Culvert grids.
  • Trash screens.
  • Flood defence for buildings including new flood walls.
  • Flood doors to SEPA Gauging Station.
  • Drainage to sports pitch.
  • Sheet pile design.
  • Temporary works across the project.
