Mark Coughlin

Structural Concrete Competition - 1st Prize

Competing against universities from throughout the UK, Mark and his team received a unanimous judges’ decision for their 60-page design report, which included scheme designs, detailed calculations and technical drawings of an innovative precast concrete diagrid and post-tensioned flat slab scheme for a six-storey, elliptical-shaped office building with basement.

IStructE NI Graduate and Student Papers Competition - Graduate Prize - 1st Place - Winner of John Hill Cup

The Sperrin Giants - a series of steel-framed, timber-clad sculptures in Co. Tyrone, Northern Ireland - was the project that I presented. Key design challenges included the design of the 11m tall Mullaghcarn mountain sculpture, with a cantilever frame being proposed to resist extreme wind pressures that exist at the 542m altitude. This was achieved through designing a stabilising frame below ground level.
