The aim of the project was to create a room from which the view could be enjoyed through seasonal changes while being sheltered from the elements. The solution was to provide a glass box with a much transparency as possible around the perimeter, but with a solid roof to provide a sense of protection. Design ID provided a solution of cruciform columns fabricated from mirror polish stainless steel which reflects the surroundings and helps them to disappear. The columns are set back from the corners and set behind glazing mullions to increase their invisibility. A solid masonry structure below provided a firm footing for the structure above while acting as a store room. The surrounding area has been decked to create a platform which surrounds the structure.
