Ian is a Managing Director and founder of Design ID, establishing the practice in 2005 with a clear ambition to create a design‑led engineering consultancy that works in true partnership with architects to deliver exceptional outcomes in the built environment. With nearly three decades of experience in civil and structural engineering, he combines deep technical understanding with a strong architectural sensibility shaped by his early studies in Structural  Engineering with Architectural Design at Heriot‑Watt University, where he graduated top of his year and was awarded the Watt Club Medal for achievement.

Ian’s career began with Arup in London and Glasgow, contributing to landmark projects including the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden and the award‑winning “Homes for the Future” development at Glasgow Green. After returning to Northern Ireland, he joined Mott MacDonald and played a pivotal role in strengthening their structural capability, introducing new technologies and design approaches while delivering major retail, education and industrial projects in collaboration with leading architectural practices.

Today, Ian provides strategic leadership across Design ID’s studios, guiding the continued growth, quality and design ethos of a company that has evolved from a small specialist team into a multidisciplinary, design‑driven consultancy working across the UK and Ireland. Known for his calm, thoughtful leadership style, he champions open collaboration, rigorous engineering thinking and a commitment to buildability, efficiency and innovation.

Ian is particularly passionate about engineering that elevates architectural
intent, embedding sustainability, lean design and long‑term value into every project. Playing an active role in developing talent across the business, mentoring emerging engineers and fostering a culture of curiosity, creativity and accountability.
