Crossrail - Urban Realm & Station Upgrades

Crossrail platforms 3

In 2020, Design ID was appointed to provide civil and structural design services for two projects at three rail stations as part of the Crossrail development in Western London. Our appointment was to a contractor as part of a design and build contract to enhance infrastructure at two new stations in West Ealing and Acton Mainline, and to significantly remodel Ealing Broadway. Valued at £50 million, all three schemes are located on the Great Western Main Line and fall under the Crossrail West Enhanced Stations Phase 2 – Work Package 2. Our services contributed to delivering a new high-frequency, high-capacity railway for London and the southeast, known as the Elizabeth Line, fully integrated with the existing transport network. This project aimed to improve journey times, ease congestion, and offer better connectivity for approximately 200 million passengers each year.

The projects were divided into urban realm redevelopment and upgrades to railway station accesses and platform areas.

Urban Realm (£1.5 million):
Design ID served as the Civil and Structural Engineers for the design of levels, pavements, drainage, and retaining structures at all three stations. We also procured and managed an Electrical Engineer for the design of lighting in these areas.

Station Upgrades (£1.5 million):

  • Ealing Broadway Station Alterations: Design ID procured the entire design team, including an Architect, Electrical & Mechanical Engineer, and Fire Engineer. We acted as the lead designers, coordinating our structural design with other team members while managing contractual relationships.
  • New Ticket Offices at Acton Main Line and West Ealing: We served as the Structural Engineer, coordinating and designing solutions with the Architect for new secure ticket offices.
  • Platform Reinstatement at All Three Stations: Design ID was responsible for designing platform reinstatements across 10 platforms, including surfacing, levels, drainage, retaining structures, and platform safety infrastructure such as safety fencing. This work was necessary due to significant disruption from recent installations of new bridge, lift, and stair structures. Additionally, we located new platform shelters for Persons of Reduced Mobility (PRM) and designed the foundations at three platforms.

Significant disruption to platforms required careful design of reinstatements and safety infrastructure. Design ID addressed these challenges by coordinating closely with the design team and using BIM for clash detection and efficient design integration.

Managing the design and build contract for three stations required meticulous planning and coordination. Design ID ensured timely delivery of design information and maintained clear communication with all stakeholders.

Ensuring compliance with safety and accessibility standards was paramount. Design ID developed detailed designs and specifications to meet all regulatory requirements.
