The Castlestrange Bridge, a historic nine-span masonry arch structure, is located approximately 2kms north of Athleague, County Roscommon, crossing the River Suck within a Special Protected Area (SPA-No 004097). Design ID was appointed to lead the design, act as the Project Supervisor for the Design Process (PSDP), and manage the rehabilitation works.
Our team includes Conservation Accreditation Registered Engineers (CARE) who specialise in heritage projects. We utilised traditional lime mortar techniques to ensure the repairs were in keeping with the bridge's historical construction methods. Working closely with heritage officers, we aligned our repair solutions with best practice conservation methods, preserving the bridge's historical significance.
A thorough condition survey identified numerous defects, necessitating urgent restoration to maintain the bridge's structural integrity and historical value. The project faced challenges related to archaeology and ecology, which were carefully managed to minimise impact on the surrounding Special Protected Area.
Our comprehensive approach ensured that the rehabilitation of Castlestrange Bridge not only addressed structural defects but also respected and preserved its historical and environmental context. The project is currently in the contractor procurement phase, with the aim of restoring the bridge to a safe and functional state while maintaining its heritage value.
