Hugh Turtle Prize - Mark Coughlin
Sep 14, 2021
Mark recently won the Hugh Turtle Prize for Best Performance Among MEng Students in his Project Dissertation. In context, when bridges are subject to live loads, such as vehicles passing over them, beams deflect downwards resulting in displacement. Mark’s research involved the development of a computer vision algorithm to remotely measure this type of dynamic displacement to sub-millimetre accuracy using a Go-Pro action camera. These dynamic displacement results are essential within the wider Structural Health Monitoring sector to ensure the condition of the structure is safe.
