Flood Risk

Our Civil and Infrastructure Engineers are committed to designing solutions that enhance the environment and, wherever possible, replicate natural drainage processes. With increasing recognition of the need for sustainable surface water management, we embrace the use of Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) to deliver added value, reduce long-term costs, and improve operational efficiency.

SuDS are designed to manage stormwater at source by encouraging infiltration, providing attenuation, and enabling passive treatment. Our drainage strategies integrate with the surrounding landscape and support biodiversity, resulting in nature-based solutions that contribute to wider environmental and community benefits.

Flood risk and surface water management are central to our resilience planning, particularly in response to the growing threat of extreme weather events linked to climate change. Our designs accommodate increased runoff and incorporate an up to 45% climate change allowance to ensure long-term performance and adaptability.

Key features include rain gardens, filter strips and attenuation ponds, which are positioned to capture the first 15 minutes of rainfall, typically the most polluted, thereby reducing the risk of contaminants entering nearby watercourses. We also incorporate permeable paving, swales, and carefully considered levels design to minimise the impact of impermeable surfaces and promote natural water flow. Through this integrated approach, we deliver resilient, sustainable drainage solutions that protect communities, enhance habitats, and biodiversity.

St Cecilia's School, Wokingham

Design ID were appointed as Civil and Structural Engineers for the construction of a new Primary School in North Wokingham. The project included a new school building, a pavilion, car parking, public spaces, playgrounds, sports pitches, and Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) to minimise environmental impact. The school aims to provide state-of-the-art learning facilities while prioritising eco-friendly design for the local community.
